Media skills for research
scientists: introductory workshop for WITS members with award-winning science
journalist, Mary Mulvihill
Why do women rarely feature in media coverage of science? Could it be that men
are better at publicising their work?
Don't be shy . . . Its true what they say: publicity is the essential oxygen of
survival these days.
This intensive half-day workshop, for WITS members and friends, will equip you
with some basic media skills to help you publicise your research activities
and events.
You will learn How To:
Identify what's News
Write a successful press release . . . one that isn't instantly binned!
Contact journalists
Develop good media relations
We'll also cover some tips for how to organise a press conference and prepare
for an interview.
To get the most out of the day, participants should have something to
publicise, whether an event, or research finding. The workshop includes
numerous practical exercises, and the result is an enjoyable and productive
learning experience. By the end of the session, you will have drafted a press
release, and sketched out your media campaign! There are at most 12-15
participants, ensuring everyone receives individual attention.
Your tutor: Mary Mulvihill is one of Ireland's foremost science writers and
broadcasters. She runs communication and media skills workshops for

what it is like to be a researcher: before becoming a journalist, she worked
as a geneticist with the Agricultural Research Institute (now Teagasc).
