Making a Difference – Women in Technology and Science

BA Festival of Science, Sept 7th 2-4pm 2005
@ Trinity College Dublin, Uí Chadáin Lecture Theatre, Arts Building

This WITS event at the BA Festival of Science provides a wonderful opportunity to hear how the research and work of some well-known Irish scientists and engineers have helped to make a difference in our society.

Prof. Catherine Godson (VP for Innovation at UCD) will highlight the great excitement of biomedical research and discovery, using examples from her own research.

Ms. Anne Graham (Project Manager at Dublin City Council), will discuss how engineers shape Dublin city, from the depths of the city sewers to the tip of Europe’s tallest sculpture, the Millennium Spire.

Ms. Sarah Flannery (winner of the Irish and European Young Scientist Competitions in 1999), a very recent graduate, will discuss early factors in her career that have influenced her as a mathematician and cryptographer.

Dr. Mary Bourke (researcher funded by NASA at the Planetary Science Institute, Arizona), will highlight the excitement of a rapidly advancing field with many opportunities. She will discuss intriguing findings from recent missions and outline potential career pathways for bright, motivated, young scientists.

Come and meet the speakers and other WITS members immediately after the session at a reception in The Gingerman (40 Fenian Street, Dublin 2).

These talks will inspire young women interested in a career in SET and showcase the different types of opportunities that are available to all. More established WITS members will have an opportunity to hear about fascinating work in other fields, and to network with other women working in SET disciplines.
